The Self

This self portrait was done using a basic number 2 pencil with a dramatic light facing my head from the right.

My main focus was not only to capture what I saw before me (in the mirror), but to depict a wide variety of values and details including a light refraction on the right lens, hair texture, and light glare in the eyes.

Drawing the self is interesting in the sense of learning one's own facial features and textures, discovering what makes each of us physically unique and imperfect. Those imperfections are what create the extraordinary diversity we see in humans across the planet.

No one is exactly the same, yet we are all genetically almost identical.
